What is psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. A psychologist applies knowledge from a variety of domains such as biological, behavioural, mental, emotional, cultural, and social influences to understand a person’s unique personality and circumstances in order to address concerns related to mental health, relationships, or personal development, to name a few. This article by the Canadian Psychological Association provides a good overview on What is a Psychologist?

What can therapy do for me? 

People seek therapy for a number of reasons. Therapy can support with overcoming challenges, learning new skills, increasing self-awareness, or managing emotions. Therapy not only helps you work out your issues, but it can also help you recognize your strengths. Finally, therapy can be a validating experience, especially when you feel no one else understands what you are going through. 

Do I need a referral?

No, a referral is not required. You can set up an appointment on your own. Email me to book an appointment.

How long is the therapy process?

It depends on the individual and the problem(s) they want to address. For some clients, a few sessions are sufficient for working through some immediate concerns. For other clients with more long-standing issues, therapy can take longer, depending on the treatment goals and progress.

Does insurance cover psychological services?

Yes, most health insurance plans now cover a portion of services, which varies depending on your coverage. It is best to contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage amount. 

Fees for psychological services may be claimed under tax deductible health care expenses on your income tax return. 

I offer direct billing to Alberta Blue Cross insurance and Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) for First Nations and Inuit people.
